Howling For Judy

Howling For Judy

Jeremy Steig · 1970
Recording

Recorded in 1970 for Solid State Records, the track features Steig on flute alongside Eddie Gomez on bass and Don Alias on drums and percussion, with the session produced by Sonny Lester. Released on the album Legwork, the track showcased Steig's pioneering jazz-rock fusion approach on flute at a moment when the instrument was rarely heard in electric jazz contexts, cementing his reputation as one of the most adventurous flutists of his generation. The track gained widespread recognition after its flute loop was sampled as the central instrumental element of the Beastie Boys' 1994 hit Sure Shot, exposing Steig's work to an entirely new global audience and cementing the recording as a touchstone of sample culture.
