Released on Harlem Underground in 1976, Smokin' Cheeba Cheeba captured the raw, extended instrumental grooves associated with New York's independent funk recording scene. Its prominent rhythm section, organ, harmonica and conversational vocals helped establish the recording as a sought-after breakbeat among DJs and record collectors. The track became a cornerstone of the UK rare groove movement and an influential source of hip-hop samples, notably informing Tone-Loc's Cheeba Cheeba and Cypress Hill's Something for the Blunted. Its inclusion on the Master Sounds 98.3 radio station in Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas introduced the recording to a new generation of listeners.
