Halleluwah
Can · 1971Recorded between November 1970 and February 1971 at Can's studio in Schloss Nörvenich near Cologne during the sessions for Tago Mago. Damo Suzuki performed vocals with Michael Karoli, Irmin Schmidt, Holger Czukay and Jaki Liebezeit, whose near-continuous drum pattern anchors the eighteen-minute recording. Occupying an entire side of Tago Mago, the track combined extended improvisation, tape editing and a repetitive funk rhythm. It became a defining expression of Can's experimental studio method and the album's hypnotic sound. The track remains one of Can's most celebrated recordings and a major influence on post-punk, electronic dance music and experimental rock. Its piano passage was later sampled by A Tribe Called Quest on Lost Somebody.
