I Forgot to Be Your Lover

The Mad Lads · 1973
Recording

Recorded for The Mad Lads' 1973 Volt album A New Beginning, the group's final album for the Stax family of labels. The song is a cover of the William Bell and Booker T. Jones composition first released by Bell in 1968. Issued by Volt in 1973 as the B-side to I'm So Glad I Fell in Love With You, I Forgot to Be Your Lover placed The Mad Lads within Stax's early 1970s run of expanded soul arrangements. Its inclusion on A New Beginning linked the vocal group to one of the label's most enduring ballads. The Mad Lads' version became one of the group's best-known later recordings through compilation appearances, including The Best of The Mad Lads and Shaolin Soul Selection: Volume 1. Its later sample use helped keep the recording visible among hip-hop and soul collectors.
