Can’t You Tell

Vetiver · 2011
Recording

Vetiver recorded “Can’t You Tell” during the sessions for The Errant Charm, with bandleader Andy Cabic working with longtime producer Thom Monahan. The album was recorded and mixed at Melva in Los Angeles, Water Music in Hoboken and The Hangar in Sacramento. Released by Sub Pop in 2011 as part of The Errant Charm and later as a remix single, it introduced the album’s softer, more rhythm-led studio sound ahead of release. Contemporary coverage singled it out for its light percussion, soft organ detail and move away from the band’s earlier folk emphasis. The track remains one of the most visible songs from The Errant Charm and a representative example of Vetiver’s early-2010s shift toward polished, low-key pop craft. Its Bing’s Slim for Summer Dub and Mouth of Heaven remix release extended its life beyond the parent album.
