01Getting started
Tesseract VJ creates live visuals that respond to your music. Allow microphone access, then play music through a nearby speaker or feed it a direct signal through a connected audio interface. No account or external display is needed to get started. The app is for iPad and Mac; it does not run on iPhone.
Auto runs the show, VJ gives you manual decks and transitions, and Edit lets you choose and adjust clips. Tap the picture to bring the controls back when they fade away. The info button in the top bar opens the app's field guide.
02The visuals aren't responding to music
Check that Tesseract VJ has microphone access in your device's privacy settings, and that the input level in the top bar moves while music is playing. If you use an audio interface, check its connection and the signal from your mixer. A direct feed is usually clearer than a microphone in a noisy venue.
Play a loud, busy section at your performance volume and tap Calibrate. If the energy stays fixed, check the Low, Mid and High controls: selecting one holds that energy level. Choose Auto beside the energy meter to follow the music again. This is separate from the Auto performance mode at the bottom.
03Auto VJ, set times and effects
Select Auto, then use the sliders button in the top bar to open its settings. Choose the set, duration, order, change timing, transitions, titles, overlays and Auto FX. Enable Auto FX if you want the app to choose effects during the show.
A timed set shares screen time across the main clips through repeated musical visits, then loops. The timer pauses during manual VJ performance and while editing without an audience display. With Auto overlays enabled, clips assigned to overlay pads use the overlay rotation; turn it off to include those clips in the main rotation. Logos remain overlays.
For manual performance, select VJ and use the decks, crossfader and pads. Open FX to adjust rate and amount, choose Tap or Latch, or clear active effects. Use the Bars control to set transition timing.
04Importing videos, photos and logos
In Edit, tap + to open the Library. Choose Import clips for files or From Photos for your photo library. Video imports support MP4, MOV and M4V files that your device can play. Find imported media under My clips; the editor also has a Videos filter.
If a file will not import, first make sure it opens on your device and has downloaded fully from iCloud or its storage provider. Try a local copy. If it still fails, send us the file type and the error shown in the app.
Use Import logo in the Library or Overlay panel. A transparent PNG works best. The compact import window adds the image; editing happens in the normal clip editor. Find it in My clips with a LOGO tag, or use the editor's Logos filter.
Importing a logo does not put it on screen. Assign it to a pad using My overlays and logos, then tap the pad to switch it on or off, or hold it for a temporary overlay. Logo timing follows the overlay controls and Auto overlay settings. If it disappears against the picture, check the overlay is on, its opacity and blend mode.
05TVs, projectors and audience output
Connect a TV or projector using HDMI or AirPlay. The audience display receives the visual show without your controls. You can keep editing on your device while the show plays on the connected display.
If the audience screen is blank, check the display's selected input, the cable or adapter, or the AirPlay connection. For slow or uneven output, try a lower TV or projector resolution in the app's performance settings.
06Keeping the show smooth
Open the gear button in the top bar for Performance. Try Auto resolution, a lower resolution or 30 fps if the picture is struggling to keep up. You can also reduce deck preview updates and the audience output resolution. These controls let you balance detail and smoothness for your device and display.
07Recording and saving
Press Rec to start recording, and press it again to stop. The recording contains the show, its transitions and effects, and incoming sound, without the controls. It saves to Photos in a Tesseract VJ album.
If it does not save, check available device storage and the app's Photos permissions. Wait for saving to finish before leaving the app. Include any error message when contacting us.
08Contact Tesseract VJ support
Email hello@mixudg.com with your iPad or Mac model, operating system version, Tesseract VJ version, what you were doing and what happened. A screenshot or short screen recording helps. For audio or display issues, include the interface, adapter or display you are using.
