Life on Mars

Life on Mars

Dexter Wansel · 1976
Recording

Recorded at Sigma Sound Studios in Philadelphia for Wansel's debut album, the track was written, arranged and produced by Wansel. The sessions combined his keyboards and ARP synthesizer with musicians including bassist Derrick Graves, drummer Darryl Brown and MFSB's strings and horns. The title track introduced Wansel's space-themed solo work alongside his production and arranging career at Philadelphia International Records. Its synthesizer-led arrangement became an underground dance-floor favourite. The recording endured as a club anthem and a source for sampling producers. Kanye West sampled it for Lupe Fiasco's The Cool, released in 2006.
