I Walk on Guilded Splinters
Johnny Jenkins · 1970Recorded in 1969 and 1970 for Ton-Ton Macoute!, mainly at Capricorn Studios in Macon with additional work at FAME Studio B and Muscle Shoals Sound Studios. Johnny Jenkins recorded the Dr. John song with Duane Allman, Pete Carr, Robert Popwell, Jaimoe, Butch Trucks, Paul Hornsby, Eddie Hinton, Tippy Armstrong, Johnny Sandlin, and Southern Comfort. Released by Atco and Capricorn in 1970 as the opening track on Jenkins's debut album, I Walk on Guilded Splinters became the record's defining performance. The album tied Jenkins to the emerging Capricorn and Muscle Shoals network around Duane Allman and the early Allman Brothers circle. Jenkins's version became his best-known recording and a major sample source for later hip-hop and alternative rock records. Its swamp-funk groove and Duane Allman guitar work kept Ton-Ton Macoute! in circulation among crate-diggers and Southern rock collectors.
