Recording

Chairlift recorded “Bruises” for their debut album Does You Inspire You after Caroline Polachek and Aaron Pfenning formed the band in Boulder and relocated to Brooklyn, where Patrick Wimberly joined the group. The song was written by Pfenning, Polachek and Wimberly and produced by Britt Myers with Chairlift. Released by Kanine in 2008, it became Chairlift’s breakthrough single after its use in Apple’s fourth-generation iPod Nano campaign. The exposure pushed the song onto the UK Official Singles Chart and helped turn Does You Inspire You from a small-label debut into a major-label reissue. The track remains Chairlift’s signature recording and the clearest early showcase for Caroline Polachek’s melodic voice within the group’s playful pop writing. Its advertising-driven crossover became a defining example of late-2000s indie music moving into mainstream visibility through technology-brand syncs.
