Empty Belly Version

The Ethiopians · 1980
Recording

The track comes from The Ethiopians’ Studio One album Everything Crash, built around Leonard Dillon’s vocal work with Clement “Coxsone” Dodd’s production. It used the Studio One “Hot Milk” rhythm associated with Jackie Mittoo and the Sound Dimension tradition. Released in 1980, the recording placed The Ethiopians within Studio One’s late roots and rub-a-dub catalogue after their earlier ska and rocksteady successes. It connected Leonard Dillon’s voice to one of Coxsone Dodd’s most durable rhythm foundations. The track remained in circulation through Studio One reissues and the Soul Jazz Studio One Rub-A-Dub compilation. It is part of the long “Hot Milk” riddim lineage that later extended through dancehall, dub, and sound-system versions.
