Released by Vee-Jay in 1962, the single reached number 60 on the Billboard Hot 100 and number 16 on the Billboard R&B chart. Its hard-driving band arrangement gave Hooker one of his biggest crossover singles of the early 1960s. Boom Boom became one of Hookers signature songs and returned to wide public attention through later covers and advertising use. The song entered the Blues Foundation Hall of Fame and remains one of his most widely recognized recordings.
