You Shook Me

Muddy Waters · 1962
Recording

Muddy Waters recorded You Shook Me in Chicago in 1962 with Earl Hooker on slide guitar, Otis Spann on piano, Willie Dixon on bass, and A.C. Reed on tenor saxophone. The song was built from Hookers instrumental Blue Guitar, with Willie Dixon adding lyrics for Waters vocal version. Released by Chess in 1962, You Shook Me reached number 21 on the Billboard R&B chart. Its slow, heavy arrangement and prominent slide guitar made it one of Waters key early-1960s Chess singles. You Shook Me became a blues standard and reached a wider rock audience through later versions by Jeff Beck and Led Zeppelin. The recording remains one of the clearest links between Chicago blues and late-1960s British blues-rock.
