Dennis Coffey · 1971Recorded in Detroit in 1971 for the album Evolution, 'Scorpio' featured Dennis Coffey alongside members of the Detroit Guitar Band and musicians associated with Motown's Funk Brothers, including bassist Bob Babbitt and percussionist Jack Ashford. Produced by Mike Theodore, the recording featured layered guitars, prominent percussion and an extended instrumental drum break, with Jim Bruzzese engineering. Released on Sussex Records in 1971, 'Scorpio' became a major crossover instrumental hit, reaching number six on the Billboard Hot 100 and number two on the R&B chart. Its commercial success established Coffey as a recording artist beyond his extensive work as a Detroit session guitarist. 'Scorpio' became a foundational breakbeat recording, particularly influential in early hip-hop DJ culture and breakdancing. Its distinctive drum break has been sampled extensively, including by Young MC, Public Enemy and the Fugees, securing its enduring importance in hip-hop production.
