The Windjammer

Grant Green · 1970
Recording

Recorded at Van Gelder Studio in Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey on January 22, 1971, with a funk-oriented ensemble featuring Claude Bartee on tenor saxophone, Emanuel Riggins on electric piano, Wilbur Bascomb on electric bass, and Idris Muhammad on drums. The track appeared on Green's album Visions, part of his sustained early-1970s turn toward electric funk on Blue Note, positioning him alongside contemporaries like Lou Donaldson and Lonnie Smith in the label's commercial soul-jazz push. Green's funk-era Blue Note recordings, including tracks from this period, became heavily sampled by hip-hop producers in the 1990s and foundational texts for rare groove and acid jazz collectors, cementing his posthumous reputation as one of the genre's essential guitarists.
