Woman
Barrabas · 1971Recorded in 1971 at RCA Studios in Madrid, 'Woman' featured Spanish group Barrabas, formed by drummer, songwriter and producer Fernando Arbex. The original lineup included Iñaki Egaña on lead vocals and bass, Enrique 'Ricky' Morales on lead guitar, Miguel Morales on rhythm guitar, Juan Vidal on keyboards and Ernesto 'Tito' Duarte on saxophone, flute and percussion, with Arbex on drums and production. Released in Spain in 1971 on RCA Victor as part of the group's debut album Wild Safari, 'Woman' became an international club success following the album's wider release in 1972. Its driving percussion, prominent bassline, rhythmic guitar arrangements and distinctive vocal delivery helped establish Barrabas on dance floors across Europe and North America, including influential New York clubs such as David Mancuso's Loft and Nicky Siano's Gallery. The recording became an influential selection in the development of disco and early hip-hop DJ culture, with its extended rhythmic passages attracting dancers, DJs and breakbeat collectors. Its popularity continued through the 1980s rare groove movement, subsequent dance reinterpretations and reissues, preserving its reputation as one of Barrabas's most enduring recordings.
