That’s All Right
Arthur “Big Boy” Crudup · 1947Recording
Arthur Big Boy Crudup recorded Thats All Right in Chicago on September 6 1946 for RCA Victor with Ransom Knowling on string bass and Judge Riley on drums. Lester Melrose supervised the session, placing Crudups vocal and guitar in a spare small-combo setting. Released by RCA Victor in 1947, Thats All Right became one of Crudups best known records and a strong example of his postwar blues style. The record later gained wider historical importance after Elvis Presley used it for his 1954 debut single on Sun. Thats All Right became a foundational song in early rock and roll history through Presleys version. Crudups original remains central to the songs authorship and to the connection between postwar blues and rock and roll.
