My Babe

Little Walter · 1955
Recording

Little Walter recorded My Babe in Chicago on January 25 1955 with Robert Lockwood Jr and Luther Tucker on guitars, Willie Dixon on bass, and Fred Below on drums. Willie Dixon wrote the song by adapting the gospel song This Train into a secular arrangement for Walters amplified harmonica and vocal style. Released by Checker in 1955, My Babe became one of Little Walters biggest hits and reached number one on the Billboard R&B chart. The single showed how Chicago blues could reshape gospel material into a concise commercial record without losing its hard rhythmic edge. My Babe became a blues standard and one of the defining songs in Little Walters catalogue. It was later recorded by artists including Elvis Presley, Ricky Nelson, Dale Hawkins, and the Righteous Brothers, extending its reach across rock and pop repertoires.
