Doin Ya Thang
Oliver $ · 2013Produced by Berlin-based Oliver Siebert, the track was built around extended vocal samples from Moodymann's live DJ set at the Cutloose 2nd Birthday Party in Manchester in 2010, layered over a low-slung bass guitar riff and minimal house percussion. Released on Jesse Rose's Play It Down label in April 2011 as a limited 200-copy vinyl pressing, the track reached number one on Beatport's sales chart for five weeks and topped Resident Advisor's May chart. It sparked one of the most heated debates in the house music community about sampling ethics, with critics arguing the track exploited Kenny Dixon Jr.'s live performance without credit or permission. The track remains a touchstone in discussions around sampling culture and artistic ethics in dance music, and its enduring popularity led Defected Records to issue an official repress in 2026 more than fifteen years after initial release.
