Stratus
Billy Cobham · 1973Recorded on 14–15 May 1973 at Electric Lady Studios in New York, Stratus featured Billy Cobham on drums, Tommy Bolin on electric guitar, Jan Hammer on electric piano and Moog synthesizer, and Lee Sklar on electric bass. Composed and produced by Cobham, the recording was engineered and mixed by Ken Scott, with mixing completed at Trident Studios in London. Released on Atlantic Records in October 1973 as part of Cobham's debut solo album Spectrum, Stratus was a nearly ten-minute instrumental built around a hypnotic bassline, extended guitar improvisation and powerful drumming. Its combination of intricate rhythmic patterns, electronic keyboards and rock-influenced guitar playing helped establish Spectrum as a landmark recording in the development of jazz fusion. Stratus became one of Billy Cobham's signature compositions and an enduring influence on drummers, bassists and guitarists, particularly through its distinctive bassline and Tommy Bolin's expressive guitar performance. The recording subsequently reached wider audiences through sampling, including Massive Attack's Safe from Harm, and interpretations by musicians including Jeff Beck, establishing its lasting influence across jazz, rock and electronic music.
