Trouble in Mind

Sister Rosetta Tharpe · 1941
Recording

Sister Rosetta Tharpe recorded Trouble in Mind in New York on June 27 1941 with Lucky Millinder and His Orchestra. The Decca session paired Tharpes vocal and guitar with Millinders big-band setting on Richard M. Jones blues standard. Released by Decca in 1941 as the flip side to Big Fat Mama, the record documented Tharpes move through secular blues and swing material during her work with Millinder. It showed her gospel-rooted voice and guitar style fitting into a commercial dance-band context. Trouble in Mind remained part of Tharpes early recorded work and later appeared on chronological reissues of her 1938 to 1941 recordings. The performance stands as one of her clearest links to the older blues standard repertoire.
