Hustler Baby

Recorded in 2006 by James Ford and Jas Shaw in Simian Mobile Disco’s early studio workflow, after a run of instrumental sessions they were building for DJ sets. Char Johnson freestyled over the track, and Ford and Shaw later chopped up and reworked her vocals into the finished single. The track became Simian Mobile Disco’s breakout early release and established their blend of club-first electronics with guest vocals. It drew attention ahead of their debut album and helped define the duo’s 2007 breakout period. It remained one of Simian Mobile Disco’s signature tracks, appearing on later compilations and in DJ Hero 2’s DLC mix with Technotronic’s "Pump Up the Jam." The song has also been sampled and remixed by later artists, extending its reach beyond the original club scene.
