Privacy.
01The short version
Synapse collects no information about you. There are no accounts, no ads, no analytics and no tracking, and nothing you do in the app is sent to us. Its AI runs on your Mac, and your files stay where they are.
Something leaves your Mac only in these cases, and only when you use them: your speech, if your Mac can't recognise your language on the device (part 06); a model download, if you install one through Ollama; and your questions, if you choose an Ollama model that runs on Ollama's servers (part 05). None of it comes to us.
02Who we are
Synapse is made by MIXUDG LTD (“MIXUDG”, “we”, “us”), 42 Bluebell Close, Kingsnorth, Ashford, Kent, TN23 3NG, a company registered in England and Wales, number 17515725. We are the controller of any personal information described in this notice. You can reach us at hello@mixudg.com.
03Your files
Synapse only opens the files and folders you choose, and reads them where they are. When you add files to a knowledge store, Synapse saves passages of their text, and an index for searching them, in the app's own folder on your Mac or in a folder you choose. Your list of projects is saved in the app's own folder. Deleting a knowledge store deletes its file.
Chats aren't saved: they're kept only while the app is open. Images you create are kept only until you save or copy them.
04The AI on your Mac
Out of the box, Synapse uses Apple's on-device model, part of Apple Intelligence, to answer, and Image Playground to create images. Both run on your Mac. Reading text from scanned PDFs is also done on your Mac.
05Ollama (optional)
If you use Ollama, a separate free app that isn't made by us, Synapse talks to it only on your own Mac, at its local address. When the app opens, Synapse checks whether Ollama is running and which models it has. When you use an Ollama model, Synapse sends it your questions and passages from your files so it can answer. Ollama handles those under its own privacy policy. If a model you've added to Ollama runs on Ollama's servers rather than on your Mac, Ollama sends your questions there.
When you install a model from Synapse's Model Store, Synapse asks Ollama to download it, and Ollama downloads it from the internet. Synapse itself doesn't connect to the internet for this.
06Talking to the avatar
With your permission, Synapse listens through your Mac's microphone while you talk to the avatar, and turns your speech into text with Apple's speech recognition. It only listens after you press the microphone button (or ⌘L), and stops when you finish.
If your Mac can recognise your language on the device, your speech stays on your Mac. If it can't, Apple's speech recognition sends the audio to Apple's servers to recognise it, under Apple's privacy policy, and Synapse's voice settings show “Server only for this language”. Synapse doesn't record or save your audio. The avatar's spoken replies are made on your Mac.
You can turn microphone and speech recognition access off at any time in System Settings → Privacy & Security.
07Links to websites
Browse catalogue and Get Ollama open chattozen.com and ollama.com in your web browser. Those sites aren't part of the app, and their own privacy policies apply.
08Settings
Your persona, agents, voice and avatar settings, and your choice of store and project, are saved in the app's settings on your Mac.
09Information Apple shares with developers
Apple handles your purchase and download of the app. If you have chosen in your device's settings to share analytics with app developers, Apple may give us crash reports and statistics about how the app performs. These come from Apple, not from the app, and Apple gives them to us in a form that doesn't identify you. We use them only to fix problems.
10If you contact us
If you email us, we receive your email address, your name if you include it, and whatever you write. We use it only to reply and to help you. Our legal basis is our legitimate interest in answering you. We keep the conversation for up to two years after it ends, then delete it, unless the law requires us to keep it longer. Our email is provided by a mail service that may store messages on servers outside the UK; where it does, they are protected by the safeguards UK data protection law requires.
11What we don't do
We don't sell or share information about you, use it for advertising, or track you across other companies' apps or websites. The app has no accounts, no sign-in and no in-app purchases.
12Children
The app isn't aimed at children and collects nothing from anyone, whatever their age. If a child under 13 has emailed us, a parent or guardian can ask us to delete that email.
13Your rights
Under UK data protection law you have the right to ask for a copy of the information we hold about you, to have it corrected or deleted, to restrict or object to how we use it, and to have it moved to another service. Because the app sends us nothing, the only information we could hold about you is an email you've sent us. To use any of these rights, write to hello@mixudg.com. We'll reply within one month.
If you're unhappy with how we've handled your information, please tell us first. You can also complain to the Information Commissioner's Office: ico.org.uk/make-a-complaint, or 0303 123 1113.
14Changes to this notice
If the app starts handling information differently, we'll update this notice and the date at the top before the new version reaches the App Store. The terms for using the app are in the Synapse Terms.
