Ain't Nobody's Business
Jimmy Witherspoon · 1949Jimmy Witherspoon recorded Aint Nobodys Business in 1947 with Jay McShanns band, reviving the 1920s Porter Grainger and Everett Robbins song in a postwar blues-ballad setting. The performance placed Witherspoons vocal in front of McShanns piano-led Kansas City band style. Released by Supreme, Aint Nobodys Business became Witherspoons breakthrough hit and reached number 1 on the Billboard Race Records chart in 1949. The record established him as a major postwar blues shouter and helped return the song to broad blues and R&B circulation. Aint Nobodys Business became a widely recorded blues standard, with later versions by artists including B.B. King, Billie Holiday, Freddie King, and Etta James. Witherspoons version remains one of the key postwar interpretations of the song.
