Saturday Love (feat. Alexander O'Neal)

Cherrelle & Alexander O'Neal · 1985
Recording

"Saturday Love" was recorded in 1985 at Flyte Tyme Studios in Minneapolis during sessions for Cherrelle's second album, High Priority. Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis wrote and produced the duet, with Cherrelle and Alexander O'Neal sharing lead vocals and Steve Wiese engineering. Released in October 1985, the single became Cherrelle's biggest crossover hit, reaching number 26 on the Billboard Hot 100, number two on the US R&B chart and number six in the UK. Its conversational duet format and Jam & Lewis production made it one of the defining recordings of Cherrelle and O'Neal's association with the Minneapolis production team. "Saturday Love" became a signature recording for both Cherrelle and Alexander O'Neal and an enduring staple of 1980s R&B retrospectives. Its refrain and duet structure have continued to inspire covers, remixes and later recordings drawing on the song.
