Baby It's You
The Shirelles · 1961"Baby It's You" was recorded at Bell Sound Studios in New York City with Shirley Owens on lead vocal and the Shirelles providing the group harmonies. Luther Dixon produced, Burt Bacharach arranged and played piano, and Bacharach's voice can also be heard among the opening backing vocals. Released in November 1961, the single reached number eight on the Billboard Hot 100 and number three on the R&B chart. Its distinctive vocal arrangement and Bacharach composition made it one of the Shirelles' major early hits. The recording became a girl-group standard and provided the template for numerous later interpretations, most notably the Beatles' 1963 version and Smith's 1969 hit recording. Its vocal arrangement was particularly influential on subsequent covers.
