The backing track was written, programmed, and performed at Wunderwerke Studio in Wachtersbach, then sent to Celluloid for the addition of Afrika Bambaataa’s rap and other vocals at RPM Studios in New York City. The release is credited to Time Zone, with Bernard Zekri and Afrika Bambaataa handling production. It was Time Zone’s first single and one of the early electro-rap records associated with the breakdance era. Released on Celluloid in 1983, it helped define the sound and international reach of Bambaataa’s post-Planet Rock projects. The track became a durable sample source and has been used in dozens of later records, with WhoSampled listing more than 90 sampled-in appearances. Rusty Egan later covered it as “Wonderwerke,” underscoring its continued cult status among electro and hip-hop collectors.
