The Passenger

The Passenger

Iggy Pop · —
Recording

Iggy Pop recorded The Passenger in 1977 during the Lust for Life sessions at Hansa Studio by the Wall in Berlin. The track was written by Iggy Pop and Ricky Gardiner, with David Bowie, Pop and Colin Thurston producing the album under the Bewlay Bros. credit. The Passenger first appeared on Lust for Life and as the B-side to Success in 1977 before becoming a UK single in its own right in 1998. Its rolling guitar figure and travel-themed lyric made it one of Pop's defining solo recordings. The Passenger became one of Iggy Pop's most enduring songs through film, television, advertising and repeated covers by later artists. Its 1998 UK single release reached number 22 on the Official Singles Chart and kept the song in the pop canon beyond its original album context.
